Wellington, Monday. Levin and Co. have received intimation that the Orient steamer Garonne left Plymouth on the Ist instant, with 308 paisengers Arrived— The Alma, from New York. Ship Media, from London, 90 days from Start Point. She crossed the Line on June 4th, sighted Tasmania on July 95th, Cape Farewell on the 2nd August, and made the Heads at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Experienced bad weather throughout the passage. She brings 8 saloon, 2 second cabin, and 3 steeiage passengers. Tuesday. A piece of land in Willis-street, 60 feet by 100 feet, adjoining the Empire Hotel, and formerly occupied as Turnbull's store, was sold by auction this afternoon, and purchased by Mr Thomson, of Thomson and Shannon for £134 per foot. Waiuku, Tuesday. The ketch Reliance, owned by Stewart and Co., sawmillers, of Wellington, went ashore between Waikato and Manukau yesterday. All the crew got ashore. The vessel is considerably damaged. She was insured for £1000 in the South British and National offices. Taranaki, Monday. The Taranaki arrived here yesterday at 3 p.m., after a passage of 27 hours from Manukan Heads. She could not be tendered, and left at 5 p.m. to take shelter under the Sugar Loayes. She parted her cable and had to put to sea, returning at 7.30 this morning to land the San Francisco mail, and sailed again at 10.30 a.m. There wa3 a very strong south-westerly gale yesterday, accompanied by terrific squalls, with a heavy sea, moderating during the night. The Herald authoritatively contradicts a rumor which has appeared in the Wellington papers relative to Sir John Coode's report against the feasibility of constructing a harbor at New Plymouth. Lawrence, Monday. There has been a snow storm here such as was never known here before. The Blue Spur claims all knocked off work, the morning train from Dunedin stuck in a ten feet snow-drift at Houndhill, and the tunnel traffic was suspended. Ahadba, Monday. Owing to a heavy fall of snow, all communication between Reefton and here has been stopped during the past four days. It is still snowing heavily, Chbistchdrch, Tuesday. The Government surveyors are making a survey of the branch line from the Lytfcelton and Christchurch railway to Sumner 8 the principal seaside resort of North Canterbury. According to the report read at a meeting of the Charitable Aid Board the annual expenditure on Christchurch Hospital was stated to be £800. The number of officers, including the visiting staff, is 36, and the number of beds 130. Considerable difficulty is experienced in obtaining a resident surgeon, the salary offered being £200 per year. Bluff, Tuesday. Ihe Albion arrived this morning from Melbourne. She left there on the 31st July, and encountered heavy gales from the southwest with frequent squalls of hail and snow, and a tremendous sea. She shipped large quantities of water, and had her topsaila blown away. She brings 21 saloon and 23 steerage passengers, and 321 tons of cargo for all ports.
