The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 1878.

An information was lodged at |,he, Police Court thistoojenihk against an individual for being out in pursuit of game yesterday without a license, and after the close of the season. The case will be heard on Wednesday. In the House yesterday, Mr Bartou, asked whether the Government: had made any enquiry into certain charges uiade by himself against the Wellington police, and, on receiving a reply in the negative, he gave notice that he would move to-morrow (today), " That this House hears with regret that the serious charges made against the police by a member of the House in his ad dress to his constituents, and made the subject of strong comment by the Press, have not been properly investigated} and that the Government be requested td investigate these Charges-." Whether or not the Government, in the event of this vote of censure being agreed to, will resign remains to be seen. It is scarcely credible that a wife should be bought and sold in the City of Wellington in these days of enlightenment; but such an event did a'ctualiy occur there yesterday. The Post of last night relates all the circumstances and publishes the following copy of the document by which the bargain was clinched:— "Wellington, Ist August, 1878. " I hereby release and sell out to Jack Igoe, her original lover and colonial husband, all claim to my wife Sarah Ann Roberts (pianist), at Jones's Wellington Saloon, for the sum of £2 10s. " (Signed) Tugs. John Roberts. "Witnesses— James' Morrissey, C. Winu." The New Zealander of yesterday says : — The amusement-loving people of Wellington are promised, from an unexpected quarter, a novelty in the matter of entertainments— vo less in fact than an amateur company from Nelson. It eeems that our quiet neighbors in Blind Bay have been passing the winter evenings pleasantly aWay by means of dramatic entertainments, the gem of the season being " Trial by Jury." This ha9been so successful, that the manager of the company has determined, if arrangements can be made here, to bring over plaintiff, defendant, jury, judge, and crier, including the requisite number of bridesmaids, of course, for the purpose of proving to the inhabitants of the Enipirs City the capability of " Sleepy Hollow" to produce something besides the fruit, flowers, and vegetables that we have been wont to believe were the only articles of Nelson growth worth importing. In all seriousness, however, we shall be glad to welcome the Nelson Amateur Opera and Dramatic Company, and knowing well that they possess more than ordinary talent, we may predict that their enterprise will prove an unqualified success. We direct attention to the important sales by auction to be held to-morrow by Mr Mabin, particulars of which will be found in his advertisements.
