The Awaroa leaves for Wanganui tonight. H.M.S. Sappho is now on a visit to Brisbane. The Lytteiton arrived at Blenheim from Nelson to-day at noon. The Wallace arrived at Wanganui from Nelson to-day at 12.15 p.m. Tbe Ocean Bird has arrived at Wellington from Eaiapoi. She loads for Nelson direct. The Murray was heing tendered this morning at New Plymouth, and should leave for Nelson this evening. The Charles Edward arrived at Greymouth from Hokitika this morning. She leaves for "Westport to-morrow at noon. The Kennedy arrived at Wellington this morning at 9.30. She leaves on the return trip to-morrow. ;-. The, steamer Garonne had to throw overhoard 150 tons of cargo before she could be got off.
: The Albion, which leffc Melbourne on Thursday last, will be due at Hokitika this evening. .
/The Tararua was due afc the Bluff this morning, bufc up to the time of our going to press her arrival was nofc notified. The Claud Hamilton arrived at Wellington on Sunday afternoon, and left on the return trip yesterday afternoon. Captain Cbatfield is in command.
The Taranaki leffc Onehunga at 10.45 this morning. She will arrive here to-morrow evening and sail for Wellington and South at 10 a.ra. on Thursday. The cargo of the Woodbine is being rattled out of her as fast as possible, and in the course of a day or two she will be discharged. The Tasso will take her place, there being no berth afc present for her alongside the Commercial Wharf.
The Tasso was in company with the bar r ques "Victoria and Edwin Basset, bound for .Wellington, nearly the whole way down from Newcastle. Neither of those vessels have yet arrived at their destination.
The^ Union Company's s.s. Wellington, Captain M'Gee, arrived in harbor this morning at 7.30. She lef fc Wellington at l p.m. yesterday, and reached Picton at 7pm; after a stay of two hours sailed for Nelson, arriving here as above. The Wellington sailed for Picton and Wellington by the same tide at 10.45 aim.
The great lighthouse which stands on the Trocadero, Pari*, at the present International Exhibition is a subject of greafc interest. The lighthouse in the 1867 Exhibition was only 53 metres (180ft) high, whereas the present one will reach 127 metres, or 413f fc in height. The lighthouse has been ordered for Plymouth, and its white and red lights will be seen 7 leagues on the main. It will contain ten rooms for attendants, two provision bunkers, an infirmary, and a bedroom With ten beds for the shipwrecked. About 50 metres (162ft) above the level of the sea ft moveable annular plate is provided, carrying a big cannon for shooting the salvage line, a range of 8000 and 10,000 metres. Near the base of the gigantic Pharos there is a complete and improved lifeboat arrangement, which allows of a lifeboat being lowered by one hand.
