Note to my Customers and tlie Public in the matter of Kerosine Oil and its safety or otherwise, , I /^IIJSTOMEBS who use the higher priced oils, which I have always r^com\J mended in preference to the; ordinary qualities, may rely on their "being perfectly safe, as they are pronounced by authorities here and elsewhere; to be far above the legal standard of inflammability. ' ; The ordinary qualities of Oil imported into New Zealand, in reference to ihe testing of which so much has of late been reported in the newspapers, nijay be as a rule sufficiently safe to (stand the test, required by English law, viz., 100 degrees, bufc may not reach, the New Zealand standard of 110 degrees; Unfortunately there have been exceptions. I Badly trimmed lamps, and dirty burners, are a much greater source of daneerthan the use of oil ranging in fire test from 100 to 110 degrees. ' it. : I ■ '■ ■ V |-■ A simple test, slightly altered from (Downer's pamphlet, is here submitted, that consumers may judge for themselves as to the kinds of oil they are using. ; TJEST ;~;.': s ;; :: ; ; .;'f :^| ;;: Take a cup or tumble^ fijll it nearly fuil.Wf water warmed 'so that a thermometer inserted therein shows. a mean temperature of ljlO^ degrees, pour a small quantity of oiP 'on: the water; stir a little, then pass a lighted match quickly but closely over the surface; of the oil once ; if it ignites do not use the oil, it is unsafe ; if it does not ignite it cap be safely used. . , - j Tours respectfully, W. C. WILKINS. Bridge-atreet, Nelson, June, 1878. ] '.
