The average attendance of schqol children in the Canterbury Provincial District 13 10,064, equal to 72 per cent. There is an improved tone in the grain market. Wheat enquiry good; some large parcels have recently changed bauds. Local quotations are — wheat, 4s 4d to 4s 7d; oats, 3s 7d to 3s 8d; barley, 4s 9d to 5s Id; potatoes, 45s to 47s 6; fiour, £11 to £12; butter, 8d; cheese, 5d to s£d. Auckland, Friday. Count de Zaba has given two very successful lectures, and received special thanks from 1 the Board of Education. The members of the Temperance Association memorialised the Board of Education to make arrangements for teaching children the beauty of temperauce and the evil of alcohol. The Board agreed to consider the matter. Mr Sheehau, replying to a deputation re the Wynyard Pier, said he had hopes that Auckland would soon be made the chief naval station in the South Pacific. Hokitika, Friday. Mr Button addressed the. electors last night. He expressed his views strongly against the Grey Government, and that, moreover, he would oppose Sir George Grey on all Ministerial questions, and as he believed his constituency was favorable to the Grey Ministry he had no desire to represent a minority. It was moved " That the thanks of the meeting be accorded to Mr Button for his past services, and that this meeting has every confidence in him for the future." To this an amendment was moved as follows — " That after Mr Button's political views expressed to-night, whilst having the highest respect for his able and conscientious services in the past, this meeting is of opinion that the sympathies of this constituercy would be represented more in accordance with public opinion here were it represented by a supporter of Sir George Grey." the amendment, on being put, was declared to be carried by a large majority. It is certain that after the result of the meeting Mr Button will resign. Kaikoura, Saturday. . The polling for the Cheviot election is as follows: — For Saunders: At Kaikoura, 59; Waiau, 17; Cheviot, 2. For Ingles: At Kaikoura, 43; Waiau, 5; Cheviot 5. The returns for Glenmark are not yet received.
