An inquest upon the fire of Sunday was called by Dr Smyth, the coroner, for noon yesterday, but in consequence of a telegram from the insurance company to the Government the inquest was postponed till it could be conducted by Mr Carew, R.M. To-day it has been commenced at eleven o'clock, and the evidence goes to show that the fire originated in the back dining room. The inquest has just concluded, and the jury returned a verdict that there was no evidence to show how the flre The case has caused great excitement here. Auckland, Thursday night. The Government have determined to stop the sale of native reserves. Seven were offered to the Government during Mr Sheehan's recent visit to the King country, but declinad. He informed the natives that it was to prevent them becoming landless. A large number of reserves hare been parted with during the last few years to private speculators. Hawks, a sailmaker on H.M.S. Sapphire, during her passage here, jumped overboard and rescued a man named Beagley, who had fallen overboard. Hawka held him up for 37 minutes till the boat picked them up. Beagley was insensible. This is the seventh life Hawks has rescued. He holds the Humane Society's medal. New Plymouth, Friday. The Stella, with Judge Gillies on board, has left for Wellington.
