[press agenct.] Wellington, Friday. The Evenivg Argus was sold to day to Mr Gardiner, formerly one of the proprietors of the Sacramento Union, California, the name to be changed to Evening Chronicle. The Wellington Eaiiway is expected to be opened as far as Featherston in four months. The prospectus of a new morning paper to be called the New Zealander is published. It will make its first appearance on the 20th proximo. The Baihvay Station at Kaikati, Upper Hutt, was broken iuto and robbed of a quantity of money in the safe and a lot of tickets. v At the cattle sale yesterday, cows realised £5 10s to £10, and calves 365. Saturday. In receiving a deputation from the Education Board yesterday, Mr. Ballance said that he considered the sum voted for education purposes inadequate and that the Government iuteuded next session to ask for a vote of ,£lOO,OOO for education purposes. Auckland, Friday. Arrived— Flagship Wolverine. Mr Buckland quotes beef, 22s to 27s ; fat sheep, lower than last week. Share market— Bank of Kew Zealand, £24 2s to £25 ; National, 72s 6d to 755 ; Colonial, 51s 6d; Moanatairi, 62s 6d to 655 ; Alburnia, 56s to 575; Koranui Hill, 9s 6d; Cure, 5s 3d to 5 s 9d; Gas Company, £10. Mrs Warren was committed for trial on charges of larceny and arson, at the Waterloo Quadrant. Oamaru, Friday. The grain market is quiet. Grain is now beginning to be delivered in considerable quantities. Wheat, 4s to 4s 4d ; oats, 3s ; bright milling do, 3s ; prime malting barley', 4s 6d to 5s ; flour, £11 10s to £12 ; oatmeal, £18; pearl barley, £20; pollard. £5 10s ; bran, £3 10s. Rivkrton, Saturday. A five roomed house, the residence of Mr John Arnett was burned down at Eastern Bush early yesterday. The property was insured in the South British for £200. Napier, Saturday. The Arlington estate has been cut up and sold, and realised over £12,000. Suburban sections ranged from £6 to £18 per acre. A sale of small farm settlements brought from £3 10s to £8 per acre, and realised £45,000. As the land was of very ordinary quality the prices obtained excited surprise, and several other runholders contemplate cutting up their lands and offering them for sale on deferred payments. There is a talk of constructing tramways to enable these large runs to be brought into the market for small farms.
