(Per Alhambra). MiiLBODUNE, March 13. Strong efforts were made to bring about a compromise between the two houses of the Legislature, but of no avail, although there was a strong inclination to do so on both sides.

The Governor and Commissioners of Audit have signed the necessary warrants empowering expenditure under the 45th section of the Constitution Act.

The Governor has received another telegram from the colonial office, but it is strictly private. It is said to be satisfactory so far as it goes. In the meantime matters go on quietly, and even if no compromise should be arrived at the Government will have £300,000 available to carry on until the end of July. The Chimborazo arrived after a 42 days passage with salmon ova for New Zealand. She brought a large number of passengers. A tender was accepted for the Stawell and Horsham Railway of 52 miles, at £2270 per mile.

The sub-committee of the Barry testimonial recommend a bronze>tatue on marble pedestal to be placed in the first public library.

Sir John Coode is at present in Gippsland examining the Lakes entrance on behalf of the Government. He proceeds to Sydney shortly and then home via California.

At a sale of yearlings recently held the different lots averaged as follows :— N. A. Einley's, 233 guineas ; Phillips' 132 ; Girrath's223 guineas. A large number were sold.

The Stakes paid over on the Autumn Meeting amounted to £8080, Messrs B. C. Fisher and J. Wilson were the highest winners. The attendance at the meeting M r as very moderate. Adelaide. The approaching general election is occupying much attention. The writs will be issued this week, and the Premier issues his manifesto of the Government policy in a few days.

Hobarton.

The fire destroyed property of the value of £12,000, partly covered by insurance. The loss included Kisbv's saw mills.
