ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

Considerable consternation was created in town about noon to-day, by the report that Mrs Daly, wife of Mr John Daly sub-in-spector of sheep, and daughter of Mr R, Dishor, of the Trafalgar Hotel, had attempted to commit suicide by cutting her throat. Upon making enquiry we learned that the rumor was only too true. Mrs Daly, it appears, has for some time been suffering from great depression of spirits, which was increased by the death of her infant child, which occurred about six weeks ago. Since then she has been residing with her father, and having been a little more cheerful of late she last week returned to her home in Waimea-street. To-day about noon her husband, after having been out, {returned to the house and found the bedroom door closed, and locked on the inside. He kuocked, whon his wife opened the door and immediately fell down at his feet, bleeding profusely from her throat, on which she had inflicted a tremendous gash with a table knife. She was sensible and could make signs, but was unable to speak. Dr Earrelle was sent for and did all that was possible to save her life, but this, we regret to hear, is regarded as almost hopeless. The latest news just before we went to press was that Mrs Daly had rallied considerably.
