CORRESPONDENCE.

To thb Editor oi' the ' Evening Mail.' Sir — I have more than once seen in your paper unfavorable comments on the large crop of J.P.s brought forth in New Zealand. The principle of rewarding the person who has been fortunate enough to amass a few thousand pounds may or may not be sound, but, to say the least, it should be necessary for them to undergo an examination in the rules of evidence, and they should also have a smattering of the statutory laws of New Zealand. These remarks are called forth through the absurd judgment given in the case Eden v. White, heard at Brightwater yesterday. The old saying "Bonis nocet quisquis pepercerit malis " is especially applicable in this case. It is only fair to state that though the R.M. was in the district he was not sitting on that case. The judgment took every one by surprise, and, as I have heard, even the complainant herself. I am, &c, Pro Bono Pdblico February 5, 1878.
