Wellington, Friday. A Gazette juat issued notifies in a proclamation that the census of the colony shall be taken on the 4th of March, 1878. Au Order in Council makes certain alterations in the Regulations for the Volunteer Force. Any corps falling below the minimum will be disbanded. No claim for capitation will be admitted for any corps if there are fewer than 40 efficient members on the 31st of March in any year, and such corps will be liable to be disbanded.
Saturday. A cable message to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, dated London, 15th December, states that the wool sales closed at the level of last sales on the 14th instant. Fifty thousand bales were held over for future disposal. Sixty thousand were taken for export. A good many second hand parcels have been offered during the past sales. Cross-breds are firmer ; for superior greasy the market is easier; for scoured and superior combing washed the market is unchanged. The tallow market is quiet ; mutton, 40s ; beef, 38s 6dd. Wheat market quiet; foreigu arrivals heavy; Adelaide, 665 ; New Zealand, 50s. The leather market is flat, best sides being lO^cl.
Auckland, Friday. The Directors of the Bank of New Zealand have altered Mr Murdoch's appointment to that of General Manager, and have appointed Mr Murray as Inspector.
Timaru, Saturday. Jonas and Harfc report that the wool sales were attended by the usual trade buyers. The competition was brisk, although at a slight reduction on previous sales. The prices show a fair market value. According to late advices crossbreds fetched 8d; merino, B£d to BJd ; cross-bred full-woolled skins, 6s ; merino skins, 4s 9d to 6s 3d; lamb skins, Is 3d to Is sd; heavy hides, 19s Sd. There was heavy south-east weather last night, and about six this morning the brig Craig Ellachie parted both her anchors and went ashore. Those on board got on shore all right. The Kate Macgregor is dragging her anchors rapidly towards the beach.
The heavy fall of rain is most beneficial, all the wells and tanks having been very nearly dry.
Gkeymouth, Saturday. The Wealth of Nations Company has declared a dividend (the 32nd) of five shillings per scrip.
