[press agency.] Wellington, Tuesday. The Mayor ha3 to-day remitted to the Lord Mayor of London, by telegram, £1400 for the Indian Famine Relief Fund. The insurances on the Avalanche are stated to be— New Zealand, £7340; South British, £7592; National, £4000; Standard, £700. The Agent-General informs the Government of the sailing of the Hurunui from Plymouth, on the 16th Sept., tor Taranaki and Wellington. She will call first at Taranaki. Wednesday. Arthur Barnsley, a telegraph operator, who was recently arrested at Sydney and brought back to New Zealand, and who has been several times remanded, was thi3 morning brought before the Resident Magistrate, and committed to take his trial at the next criminal sittings of the Supreme Court for forging a money order for £io. Bail was allowed. Edward Tyler, lately in the employ of Beauchamp, Campbell, and Co., and who is well known in Nelson, has been committed for trial for uttering a valueless cheque to Cohen, jeweller, and also sentenced to three mouths' imprisonment for uttering a cheque for £1 to the proprietor of the Temperance Hotel, who changed it for him. Dunedin, Tuesday. The following telegram from Mr George M'Leau to the Acting Manager of the Union Steamship Company is published in to-night's Star:— "Mr Manders never asked for, nor did 1 ever hint at, an offer of appointment directly or indirectly; and I certainly would not in auy way make use of my position in the Union Company for a political purpose. This is only one of the untruthful statements which have appeared in the Otago Daily Times concerning this gentlemau aud others, because they decliued to barter their independence." Several iulluential gentlemen have taken a large number of shares in the Moruiny Herald Company. Definite arrangements have been made for the publication of the paper at an early date. Hokitika, Wednesday. The Christchurch roud has been considerably damaged by the late floods. Two-land-slips occured at the Otiera Gorge for nearly a mile. The road between Kelly's creek aud the gorge was washed away. Thomas Garmouth, storekeeper, has called a meeting of his creditors. Liabilities £11,300, assets £12,700. The estate is cousidered a good one. Sweeps have been drawn on the Melbourne Cup here within the past fortnight for over £7000.
