[PRtiSS AGENCY.] Wellington, Monday. A special meeting of the City Council was held this. afternoon to consider Mr Napier Bell's report on Mr Climie's drainage scheme. A letter from Mr Cliiuie was read, stating that Mr Bell's objections were founded mainly, if not enlirely, uDon misconceptions of tbe circumstances and' of the scheme, and asking that the Committee adjourn for a week, in order te give him time to prepare an answer to Mr BeU's report, and promising to show that the objections are either unfounded or answered in the report itself. The Council adjourned. Tuesday The Tasmanian cable is again interrupted. The weather in Bass' Straits for the last few days has been of a fearful character. The Northern Laud Loan and Building Company bave extended the time for the receipt of application for shares to the 24th inst. The ship St. Leonards arrived last night. She left Londou on the 30th July, and had a fair average passage. She brings about 50 passengers all well. No casualties occurred on the voyage. Lawrence, Tuesday. The north-west winds during the past few days have caused heavy floods in the Waimakiriri River, which overflowed between Christchurch and Kaiapoi, damaging the railway line and stopping communication. Tuesday. Heavy rains on Saturday night extinguished the bush fires at Oxford. Four cottages and a large area of bush is destroyed. It ia feared it is too late, as if the the south bank gives way first immense damage will ensue. Ddnedjn, Tuesday. The Dunediu branch of the Educational Institute of Otago has requested Count De j Zalie to lecture before its members. ' The Italian Opera Company commenced a ' season of 24 nights ou Saturday. The attendance was large and the performance gave full satisfaction. The tender of McGill and Eowsfc for £13,887 has been accepted for the erection of the University main building. The High School Commission report has beeu signed and forwarded to Christchurch for Mr Tancred's signature. The libel case Whitaker v. Jones will not be taken till after the sittings of the Court of Appeal, so it is virtually postponed till January. A bakery establishment, the property of Mrs Robertson, was burned down last night. It was insured iv the Standard for £200. The probable loss is over £1000.
