[PRESS AGENCY.] Wellington, Saturday. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 4.40 this afternoon. The Telegraph Department have received a communication from Adelaide to the effect ! that the Port Darwin line is interrupted beyond Bettana, but parties have been sent out to repair. Mrs Mary Ann Trueman and her daughter ' Mary Leonard Mudgway were brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day charged with child murder. A great deal of evidence was taken, aud the Court was crowded the whole time. A chemist deposed to the girl's eldest sister asking him for medicine to procure abortion for her sister, who, she said, had been outraged. He refused. Another sister bought some quick lime from him to cover a dog she said. He forgot to tell her to put water upon it, hence the body was well preserved when found in Trueman's shed. The mother and daughter were committed for trial. Monday. A series of Roman Catholic Mission Services were commenced yesterday at St Mary's by the Rev Father Henneberry, a missionary who has been conducting mission services for the past twenty-five years iv California, and on the Pacific Coast. There are three services and sermons daily, and every Catholic in Wellington is expected to attetid without fail thrice daily. Plenary indulgences are granted uuder certain conditions, such as for regular attendance at the mission services, receiving the Communion, the Holy Eucharist, &c. 'Ihe mission will last more than a week. No collection is made at the evening service. So far the church has beeu densely crowded," many cooling from very long distances. The Government have received advice by cable that the Zealandia left San Francisco on the 1 2th instant with the London mail of the 23rd August. She will be due at Auckland on October sth. The City of San Francisco arrived ou the 20th instant with the New Zealand August mail. Christchurch, Saturday. The Canterbury Police Force for the first time commence ball practice on Monday. Yesterday, a boy uamed Joblin, three and a half years old, was accidentally burnt to death at the Little River Bush, where his father was burning scrub. The Rev. Father Binsfield writes to the Press this morning, stating that four Catholic children at Loburu assert that they have been caned by the master of the local Government school for not rsadiug the Protestant Bible aud refusing to copy extracts from the same. A previous report to this effect from the same source was emphatically denied by the schoolmaster. Bluff, Monday. Arrived— Ringarooma. She left Meibourne at 4 30 p-m. on the i9th; experienced several days dense fog and reached the Bluff this moruiug. She has one steerage passenger and one hundred tons of cargo. Lyttelton, Sunday. Sailed— N.Z. Co.'s ship Waikato, for London, with 30 passengers, and a cargo valued at £130,000. Port Chalmers. Monday. The foundation stove of a Roman Chatholic Church was laid yesterday afternoon by Bishop Morau, when fully 500 persons were present. The Bishop addressed the people, aud their subscriptions were laid on the foundation stove. Grahamstown, Monday. Te Moanarui, a well knowu Thames chief, died at Parawai early this morning; there will be a great taugi. Deceased was the principal opponent to opening the Ohmemuri.
