The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1877.

Tna following candidates were nominated this morning for the vacanfi seat in the City Council : — Arthur Robert Oliver, William x Bethwaite, and James Keene Little, but we 'have since learned that Mr Oliver has withdrawn from the contest, which will now lie between the two last named gentlemen. The polling will take place on Wednesday, the Ist of August. Captain Edwik reports : — " Indications of strong winds. Any direction between north-east, north, and west ; and probably further fall of glass." There was a large attendance at the meeting of the Football Club held at the Masonic Hotel last night. It was resolved that a reply should be sent to the Secretary of the Dunedin Club accepting the challenge to play here next month. After some discussion ,with regard to allowing residents in Marlborough tio take part in the match, ic was/rejgoly'ed that the players should be con_fined.tX.residents in the, Nelson province. Herein we think the Club has made a mistake. The object of the Dunedin players, no ; doubt, is to obtain a good game, and they ate not likely to offer any objectioa to the Marlbcrough men, who hare, usually taken part in the interprovincial matches, coming fco the 'assistance of the Nelson Club, which baa lately lost some of its best players. WE.sincerejjy ;trusfc that the following paragraph from the Wellington Argus is true in every particular :— Parliament will be opened. in due form on Thursday next, and we believe that Ministers intend to use every exertion to push on, the work of the , session as rapidly as possible. A large nutni her of important measures are ready for • introduction, and instead of the first fe* . days^being wasted, as is usually the case, members will be invited to apply themselves at once to practical work. It is also statedthat Major Atkinson will be prepared to r deliver his Financial. Statement early next ! week, possibly on Tuesday evening.
