As the time for registering claims to vote at an election of a member of the House of Representatives expires on Saturday next, after which date all who are not ou the roll will be debarred for fifteen months from exercising their electoral privilege, we would urge upon those who have hitherto neglected to register to Jake advantage of the present , opportunity. •If is. true that some years will elapse before the present Parliament expires through effluxion of time, but there are other contingencies-, such as the resignation Or 'death of auy pf the present members, whifch render it advisable, that each individual who is in a position to do so should invest himself with the power of voting in the: event of ahy :suQb occasion arising;' It should' also bere•membered that although there is at present lull, and the serenity of the political atmosphere i.-such that there are no indications of any immediate disturbance, it is impossible to say how" soon a change may occur, and the calm give place to a furious storm. * For this there s;r<_ly :can.be no possible harm in being rprepuix-a. None would have been found bold enough to assert .-that the Ministry .which was in power when • the Assembly met tn June last— to refer to it as the "late Ministry would not be. sufficiently explicit, as there have been sb many changes - since thenwould have sustained a positive defeat during the first week of the last. session, and yet such was the fact, and it was quite on the cards that a dissolution might have occurred at that time, even although there had just beeu a general electiou. If any argument were needed to induce householders to place their names on the roll at once, and not to delay because there appears to be no probability of an election taking place during the next twelve mouths, a sufficiently strong'one is furnished by this fact, and any neglect to profit by so patent a warning will be inexcusable on the part of those who may be guilty of it. A sitting of the Assessment Court was held at Suburban North to-day. The only appellants were Messrs Darnell and Slater, and in both instauces the objections were allowed. Matters appear to have been conducted in a rather slovenly manner, as there was no one present duly appointed to represent the Board as required by the Act, and the list which had to be signed by the Judge vas ouly obtained by sending a special messenger to the house of the Chairman to procure it. One or two of the members of the Board complained, and not without reason, that they had not been supplied with copies of the Act. This cannot be accepted as an excuse for their- ignorauce of its provisions, but it shows great neglect on the part of the Government, who, upou bringing a new system into operation, should at least have taken care that the local bodies who were to be called upon to administer the law should be provided with every facility for making themselves acquainted with it. The following is the result of the various matches played by the Ali England Eleven iv this colony:— Auckland£Eugland won in one innings by 22 runs; Wellington: England wou in one innings by 121 runs; Taranaki: England won in one innings by I rum; Nelson: England won in one innings by 163 runs; Greymouth: England made 119 in the first innings, and 90 in the second with four wickets down. Greymouth made 50 in their first innings. Match drawnT Canterbury: England won by 23 runs. Otago: Match drawn, England having 20 to make in their second innings; Invercargill: England won in one innings by 56 runs. The Naval Brigade will parade at the Botanical Gardens this evening at seven o'clock. After drill new hatbands will be served out to the members of the company. The election of a representative of the Motueka Riding in the Waimea County Couucil takes places to-morrow. Tiie Artillery Cadets will meet for drill opposite the Police Station at half-past 7 this evening. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Southern Star Lodge will be held this eveniug. It is notified that on Friday, Saturday, and Monday next the Government Buildings will be closed. Messrs Sharp and Pickering advertise an important sale of stock and farming implements at Stafford Place, Waimea West, tomorrow. . - The Brisbane Courier has a highly imaginative New Zealand correspondent,* who evidently is not an 'admirer of tbe County system, arid does not mind telling glaring falsehoods with a view to convincing outsiders that it* has proved a failure. The following is from one of his letters :— The working of the Counties system has set all the people of New Zealand at feud with one another -.even to the setting of brother against brother, and father against son; members of the County Councils opposed to each othor go.into public houses, get excited, fall to fighting, and get bound over to keep the peace; tbe rich oppress tbe poor, ahd endeavor to unfairly overtax the' poor, and generally a condition of the greatest anarchy and confusion has arisen. Life is a burden to the unhappy victim of chronic dyspepsia and constipation. Not only are the two above-named diseases generally co-existent, but their manifestations resemble those of dangerous organic diseases with whic'i the sufferer imagines himself to be afflicted, thus mental torture is added to bodily suffering.
