INTERPROVINCIAL REGATTA.

i Second, Day. jAn angry -looking; sky and a stiff breeze from the north east, gradually increasing in strength, made people begin to wish as eleven jp'clock drew near that advantage had been takeniof ,^the glorious weather and glassy sea o| yeste^yito^up the Champion outrigger race. r rßut ;^gret!.wa3 useless,, and all that, could be done wa3 to hope that the wind .might lull as soon as the ebb tide set in. Shortly hefqm eleven the first-class sailing bbat rsce, T postpohed from yesterday, for .■tfhich .tei^tiny craft came to the post, was started,; and. while they are running thehvflve^nile course, the same which was rowed by the whaleboats in tho champion race, we will revert to yesterday's proceedings. And first we may express bur regret .that in the hurry of setting up our report one or two errors occurred that may perhaps "have misled some of our readers. By pure accident the order of arrival of thevachts and ciaast^rs yvas given in the list of winners,' alt fe9>*gK asstat'ed in the fuller report.of the :r : proceedings, neither of those races had con- / eluded when we .went to press. In the former, the; Gannet i was the first by a few minutes to arrive at the winning post, and consequently her owner claims the prize, but a protest has been lodged by the owners qf the Secret on the ground (1) that she was ; unable to complete the race as there was insufficient water *oh the course laid out by the Committee ; and (2) because when she grounded she was the leading boat in the first round by 13| minutes. For the Coasters' Race the prize is claimed by the Maid, of Italy,' as having "sailed the course and finished in due order in accordance with the sailing directions." In the matter of the Junior Gig Race, si protest has been lodged by.the.Wairaea against the Eclipse, on the ground that she, had In her two men who pulled, in ,-the"Chathpion Gig Race. These protest's, &c, will be.considered and decided hpon by the Committee thia evening. We will how return to this day's proceedings. Between 10 and ll a.tn. the (Ringarooma arrived from Wellington, bringing a large number of excursionists [who had been induced by the promise that * h .e hJ£ race should not take place until to-day to;pay Nelson a visit. By her waa .brought the handsome silver cup presented iby Messrs Shaw, Saville & Co., and which .was appropriated to the yacht race by the 'Committee. As we have said the first-class sailing boats started shortly before eleven, |a,od!a T very pretty sight the ten little white iwingedcrafts presented. Mr Tpask's Ada 'went :away?wiU- the lead but waa being j closely pressed by the Greymouth boat I Water Lily, when unfortunately an accident I occurred fo fche latter's rudder which compelled her to withdraw. A similar mishap to Mr. Cross's, Minniehaha had shortly before shut her out of the race. The Ada was never overtaken and came in an easy winner. And now a long and vexatious delay took ; place. : ; There was a strong wind blowing I against the tide which was flowing, and the j consequence was a nasty lumpy sea that ; tendered it ont of the question to sta^t the ; outriggers. . .Those who were weatherwise ; said the wind would drop shortly after noon, ' n pd that the sea would go down,* while others : seemed .tp. say that it would be better to decide not, to have the race to-day. The Committee were placed in a quandary; They didnot want to disappoint the public, and were equally, unwilling to order the boats out possibly to be capsized and their crews to run the chance of being drowned. And so an hour or more passed, by, when the force' of the . wi °AS£P 3 ibly, decreased, and the water began $0;) get jaj, trifle smoother.. The Volunteer Whaleboat Race was then' signalled, aqd three boats came to the post, ' the Echo; manned by a crew of Wellington Artillery Cadets, the Thistle by the Nelson ;ditto, and the Cutty Sark by the Nelson City : Ri#e; Cadets, the latter being ji^arly a quarter, of an hour late in putting Man appearance— by the way why is it -that Mr Taylor's boats are invariably late ? This ,rjwse, the beat . contested in the regatta, terminated in favor of the Wellington boat, and will be found described below. By the time this was over the wind had gone down completely, and the sea was so smooth that the outriggers were ordered out, and by the time they had reached the starting post there was scarcely a ripple on the water. Without further preliminary remarks we will proceed to give a report of the racing. First-cias- Open Sailing Boat fiace, 5 miles, (boats under 24f fc on keel), first prize, 1 ' 0 ; £16; second, £5.
