Wellington, Saturday. A house belonging to a Mr Parker, Te Aro, was burned down last night. The inhabitants (Miss Parker and some children) were out at the time. No explanation of the origin is obtainable. The house, a very old one, was insured in the National for JEIOO. An inquest is to be held on account of suspicious circumstances. Monday. The rumor which, has lately been current respecting the appointment of Messrs Shearman and Weldon as Commissioners of the North and Middle Islands respectively, and tbat the Hon Mr Bowen will shortly resign his portfolio as Minister of Justice, with a view to taking the position of Commissioner of the colony is entirely unfounded. Dunedin, Saturday. Wheat unchanged; oats meet ready sale at 2s 2d t023 3d from good to prime feed; barley neglected, feeding sorts 2s to 2s 6d; malting nominally, 4s to 4s 3d The Otago Rifle Association matches commence on Thursday.
