The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 1876.
The drive afc the Richmond -Hill mine had, we understand, attained a length of 29 feet on the 24th instant, and showed the lode to maintain its contained vein of silver ore. Some . assay-buttons made from the lastobtained ore show increasing richness, one of them being roughly estimated to indicate upwards of 800 ounces of silver to the ton ; but too much importance must not be attached to this circumstance, as the ore varies greatly in quality within short distances, and the specimen which yielded this enormous result was probably of exceptional richness. An average of 100 ounces to the ton would pay handsomely. The mine continues quite dry. We believe the new Mining Manager and Metallurgist, Mr Morley of Melbourne, is expected on Tuesday by the Ringarooma. A SEBIOUB accident occurred at the Port this morning to James Brandford, a man ia the employ of Messra N. Edwards and Co., who was superintending the repairs now being effected in the steamer Charles Edward* and while walking on the platform erected round her, turned round to speak to one of the men when he overbalanced himself and fell from a considerable height on to the stony beach below. "When picked up he was quite insensible, in which state he remained until his arrival at the Hospital, to which he was removed on the recommendation of Dr Squires, who was sent for to see him. It appears that he was suffering from a slight concussion of the brain, but we are glad to learn that he is progressing favorably, aud that all the symptoms are thoroughly satisfactory.
The monotony of the long night was relieved at the Port last evening by a peripatetic violinist, who paid 1 a visit ! to nearly all the hotels in that locality. Evidently his attempts to amuaa were rtot very highly appreciated, for .whea he -put the hat in circulation it was returned to him almost empty. , We regret to learn that a caae of scarlet fever has broken out in the hospital in the person of a lad who for some time past had been an inmate suffering from rheumatic fever from which he had completely recovered, and was . only remaining to recruit his strength. How the attack originated it is impossible to say as there is no other case of scarlet fever know in town, so that it cannot be attributed to^ infection. The patient, we are glad to hear, is doing well. The concert at Wakefield last night was as complete a success as most sanguine of its promoters could ever have ventured to hop© for. The room was crowded to excess, and would have been so hadit Been 'Several size* larger? fpr : there.. were .numbers outside who were unable to' gaid admission. The first part consisted of miscellaneous selections, of vocal and instrumental niuifc, the songs being as well selected, as they were carefully rendered. The. instrumental portion included a solo, on the, piano' and another on the violin, .the. first by a young lady who so delighted her Audience at the late Harmonic Society's concert, and thelatter by her young brother who on the same occasion was also equally succesful in " bringing down the house." During the interval a gentleman from Nelson amused the audience with a cornier recitation >nd -song, and the , second par 6 consisted of a Christy ; Minstrel performance which was remarkably well done. The ,w&ple affair was so thoroughly successful that it is intended to repeat it at Stoke shortly. The special train that went down from Nelson was crowded, and all who were [present were unanimous in asserting that they had spent a most pleasant evening. . '
