Tbe following is an extract from ihe Temperance News:—" The temperance cause is progressing, and {be out-look promising especially in Tasmania, where there are more Good Templars in proportion to the population than elsewhere, and the Order is strong in tbe character and social position of many members. In the seven colonies are eight Grand Lodges of Good Templurs, one iv each, two in New Zealand, with some 35,000 members." Two Chinamen were recently accused at the Arrow R.M. Oourt witb being partners in a lottery or game knowu as puk ap-pew. The defeuce rested on i ihe plea thut there was no evidence \of any lottery or game. They were, however, separately convicted, and fined £20. aud costs ol court 4a 9d; in default, oue montb's imprisonment in H.M. goal, Lawrence, with hard labor. The fines were paid. The Wellington correspondent of a contemporary wrote under date, Juue 2(i:-~ " Op to tbe present tbe proper work of the House cannot be said to have commenced, but when the Swamp
cobweb, of which Sir George Grey is the chief architectural spider ia cleared away, the flies will be ac more liberty to buzz, tbe wasps to sting, and the bees to improve the shining hours of midnight gaslight."
