GrAZHTTE )N BANKRUPTCY. — The Gazette of this morning announces the bankruptcy of Caroline Russell, hotel keeper. Aktizans' Association. — Outreaders are reminded of the entertainment to be given at die Oddfellows' Hall to-night lor the benefit of Mrs Bear who baß so frequently gratified Nelson audiences by her acting. Embezzlement . — Frederick Fy?t ■ more was brought up on remand this morning, and again remanded until the 20ih inst. Coroner's Inquest.— -The inquest upon the bodies of James Downes and Thomas Edward Kelly, who were yesterday killed by a fall of earth, commenced this afternoon at three o'clock, at the Globe Hotel. The following geDtlemen were sworn in a3 jurymen : — William Wright (foreman), Hugh Cottier, H. A. Levestam, John Cooper, Henry Bailey, Ralph Frater, Thomas B. Louisßon, Thomas Menary, John Scotland, VV. R. Waters, C. W. Moore, H. Baigent, M. Crewedßon, J. '111.1.I 1 . Bray, and Edward Atmore. The jury having viewed the body, proceeded to the ecenc? of the accident, and having returned, John Day, who was working with the deceased at the time, was called as the first witness, and was under examination when we went to press. Waimea South Steeplechase. — Thursday next has been proclaimed a public holiday, and there is every likelihood of an excellent attendance on the Wakefield course. The Late Accident. — Subscriptions are being raised for the widows and orphans of the two unfortunate men who lost thoir lives yesterday. Tt j is a case that must appeal to the sympathies of bII, and we shall have much pleasure in receiving any donations for so charitable a purpose. At the same time we should prefer to see an appeal made in a more systematic manner to ihe public, who will doubtless respond to it liberally. Public Meeting.— A meeting of thoße interested in the work of the Church of England in the diocese was held last night in the Masonic Hall, which was crowded. Some very interesting addresses were delivered by the clergy, and also by those of the laity who either reside or have travelled in the out districts. The Eev. T. Flavell, in particular, gave a humorous and most graphic account of the work ho had to perform in the thinly inhabited parts of the West Coast, which is the field of bis labor. COLLINGWOOD.— A MAN MISSING. — A correspondent writes us from Collingwood under dato 10th instant : — "An unfortunate man, named Wileou Duke, who appears to have been drinking heavily for some days, hag been miasing since three p.m. on Thursday last. He had been employed at Lightband's Gully, and escaped in a state of delirium tremens from his mates. Early that morning he was Been at Tukurua, and was then supplied with some food. He aeked the way to Collingwood, and was shown the road, but came back to Tukuruß, Baying he dared not go that way as the soldiers were all out watching him, but he again left Tukurua about three p.m., and has not since been heard of. The Resident Magistrate sent the district constable

(who was accompanied by Mr Hanson) to search along the beach, but no further tidings huve been yet heard of the unfortunate man. It is to be feared that this will turn out another case of what is only 100 common, that of publicans giving men unlimited quantities of drink, no matter how much they may be intoxicated, and I hope the Licensing Court will have the matter brought before it when the time for renewing licenses comes. If this be proved it ought to be a sufficient reason* for the Court depriving any publican of his license."
