GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.
To tim Editor ob tiik 'Evening Mail.' Sir — Eor the benefit of " Englishman " and others who appear to be quite unnecessarily ixercised about the loyalty of Nelson Catholics, let me state that at St. Mary's phdrch they may hear every Sunday morning the fcb'ngregaiion heartily aud right loyally sing the following hymni— * Doming salvam fac Regiwn nostrum Victoriam Et exavdi jios in die qua invocavei'imus te. O Lord save Victoria our Queen, And heir us in the day when we call upon Thee. Thpy will further be graliaei to know that the (o.'.ld.wing prayer is repeated every day by the offlciitingr pTiesti— '* We beseech tlifce () Almighty God that thy servant Victoria, our Queen, who through thy mercy hah undertaken the government of these Eealms may also receive an increase of all virtues, wherewith bi-ing a iorned, she, being rendered acceptable in thy siyht, may come at length to thee, who arc the way. the truth, and (he life, through Christ our Lord. Amen." I may add that every Catholic prayer book contains among the prayers for family worship one for her Majesty. Io ia almost humiliating in these days of sotiillci c lucatlonal enlightenment to hive to explain so milch of the constant practice of good Catholics, who, if they are loyal, as they ought io be, to the chief Bishop of theft Church in matters purely spiritual, are no less enthusiastic in their cev»tion to the most Constitutional Sovereign England has ever known. Let but the Queen's temporal power be threatened, and I venture to as-ert she will have no more Bturdy defenders than her Catholic subji-cts, of whom she has none more affectionately loyal than the Catholic congregatiou of Kelson. The above simple statement is all 1 intend . under any circumslances to make," it nWt sp-^ak for its'U, ad I have no frar but, it will induce enlightened and liberal rain'ded men to ju'lge me and my ciweliaionists wikh justice. AsCatholii swe are loyal to thePopefti natters strictly spiritual; as regards the State we are the loy«l subjects and unflinching supporters of Q'leen Victoria. This, in short, U the position: — Suppose the Pope was to order me to break a civil law, or be otherwise disloyal to the State, I should obey the law and set the Pope at defiance. I am, Sec, LoWTHEft Broad.
