CORRESPONDENCE.
CRYPTOGRAPHY. To tue Editor of_tujbJSbmoit Eyawpro Mai_ Sir— ln yojrr~ie7ue|af Tuesday last you kindly inserted a : _cypber communication I took tbe liberty, pf^fof warding you; nt the same time I proiniseij if no one in Nelson would or coul_ unravel tbe mysterious graph, to send you my interpretation and method of working fy that day week, viz., .to-duy, a 9 no notification to the contrary has appeared in you? column?, T will, with your kind permission^ do so now. The cypher as it appeared in the London Times of January last, and ihe,Even.ing MaU of the 25th ultimo, was as follows:— ; 3.T9M IIRFMi; D CFQ> OWDJ3 9QJ KFKP RNGQ ,Ho MJGMY HL-HKI AWOSF-953 fiFMWT 9WI 9L<WI, XO HJ D RNGQ MJ3JIR H3 KWJKDXI KWIU9WI I9IW3YCNILAt.M hTII93IJSY. J. 1 1 RENT D 9R GJ99DSB 90G OM9Y, DX MOW OT HJ ATM.TTP CIU TTI 1 .IZUMO OY HJ TTPVYN ATM 191 W / AW9SSJN./ To show the various methods I adopted before arriving at a solution of this complicated euljecl, I find, would occupy, too much of your valuable) time and space. Suffice it then to' say that, after a great d>'al of time aod trouble, seeing the kind of cypher I had to. deal with, I took the '983 "• in the cypher for tha conjunction ''ami," nod by working it accordingly arrived at the meaning of the" message, viz:—- --" Dear Edward, — I have tried all; papa will not releni;. mam hia, Fra i.k t and Carry are aaninst me. I- will- redeem my promide; prepare evfrything for Monday next. 0, Edward, lam leaving all that is dear to m* for you. How you ought lo love me. — Yours for ever, 'Frances" The key to the cypher is the fi st, and every other letter ot each word ,i lie' fifth forward, the second and every other letter the fifth back, the letters A B C _> E in" the backward Hnd forward reckoning counting as 9 7 53 1 respectively. By working according to this clue, the interpretation I have given will be arrived at. I way add that, wiih the exception of two or i hree mistakes, and the word "love" being omitted altogether, (he cypher, on examination, will be found to be a true and correct oao. I am, &?.,. Henry Lynch, Jun., Bellriogera' Troupe.
