"CLASS-CONSCIOUS."

Sir, —I am puzzled as Co the im-aiiing of the phrase "class-conscious" that is used bo often in your 'pages. What ideas and qualities in the'individual of whom it is used does it connote '( its natural signification would seem to impart a sense of the aloof ness of oiw's .iwii class, and a desire to remain therein. To take a case from fiction, 1 think that tho "Kipps" of H. <x. Welle was imbued with this sense in n high degree. Hut is it a praiseworthy quality, and is it not almost identical with the fwliug of "caste" that has kept the human mind in hobbles and has been Iho most potent factor in upholding a system of social injustice. I trust that some, correspondent will elucidate tho phrase for mo. —Yo.irs, etc., Moutoa. C. B. COLLINS.
