ROXBURGH BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING The Roxburgh Borough Council’s monthly meeting was held on Thursday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr F. A. Laloli), Councillors T. Waigth, F. Vercoe H. Tamblyn, G. Jeffery and the clerk. Apologies were received from Crs J. C. Gilchrist and J. McYey. Inward Correspondence State Fire Office wrote agreeing to take over employers liability in connection with the sewerage tunnel on condition that the Council transferred their other policy to the State Office when it expired.— Matter attended to and the request granted. District Highways Council wrote advising that the Borough could pay one half of their share of the cost of tar sealing within one month and they could pay the other half in next financial year. —This letter had been replied to advising that owing to the Council being already committed to the full for this year they would not be able to take advantage of the generous offer made by the Highways Council. They were taking steps to raise the amount required by a loan which when raised would enable the Council to pay their share of the cost of tar sealing in full in one payment. Mr W. A. Bodkin advised that the site for the health camp in Roxburgh had now been approved by the Health Department, and the Bill appointing the trustees had now passed Parliament. The Board had now been definitely constituted and would be having a meeting at an early date, when the question of proceeding with the building at Roxburgh would be placed before them for approval.Received. It was decided to write to the Lands Department, ■Wellington, in connection with having the site transferred to the Health Camp Council. Rayneon Ltd advised that they required a permit to erect an over veranda sign outside the local tea rooms and attached a rough plan of sign.—It was decided to grant the permit conditional on the Power Board having no objection.
The Minister of Labour advised that if the loan money on the sewerage scheme was expended before the completion of the scheme his department would favourably consider an application by the Council for a full time wages subsidy to enable the scheme to be completed.—lt was decided to write and thank the Minister for his very favourable offer. Dunedin City Council wrote re Otago’s representation at the Centennial Exhibition and advised that Roxburgh Borough share of the cost had been assessed at £22. —lt was decided that the council contribute the amount assessed for them. Department of Isternal Affairs advised that renewal of picture films license was now necessary.— Decided to renew the license held by the council. Employment Bureau, Cromwell advised that subsidy on wages for eradication of noxious weeds was at the rate of £2 5s for married men and 30s per week for single men.—Received. Transport Department wrote concerning a suggestion to issue L signs on motor vehicles for new drivers not considered fully efficient and when these were issued as they wer ein Great Britain the licensee wocld have to again be put through a later test for a license.—As it would be optional on the issuing authority to have the plate asked for it was decided to approve of the suggestion. The Main Highways Board advised payment of claim made for subsidy of £7O 15s 9d. Department of Health, Dunedin, wrote asking the Council to appoint Mr P. Jenner as its Sanitary Inspector.—This was done.
Works Committee The Works Committee report for the month stated that besides attending to routine work the staff had been engaged on footpaths in Abbotsford street, in erecting and repairing fences in gravel pit in connection with new horse paddock and in preparing foundation for chaff shed and removing material from Pound lane to gravel pit. They were also engaged in digging holes for trees which had been planted by the school children. The _ water trough has been moved to its new position in the reserve and the same water connection is being used by the Golf Club. Good progress is still being made with the sewerage scheme. Picture report stated that the attendances had been below the average.
Reserves Reserves report stated that treeplanting had commenced on the tailings. In connection with the trees that were dead on the tailings it appeared as if they were affected by a disease and in an endeavour to save the rest it was decided to get in touch with Mr W. Murrell of Beaumont as to whether he would be prepared to come up and advise the Council. It was also decided to advise Mr Morrell that there appeared to be a white substance on the trunks of the trees and that it appeared as if the trees were bleeding. In connection with the golf club’s application to have improvements carried out on the links it was decided that the Mayor and Cr Tamblyn watch the interests of the reserve in the matter of the work to be done. Clerk’s Report The town clerk’s renort stated that the following amounts had
ben collected since the previous meeting:—Kates, £2O 6s 3d; rate subsidy, £63 13s 2d { pictures, £72 •Os 3d; reserves, £l6 15s 2d; hall rents, £8 6s 6d; heavy traffic fees. £7 6s Sd; transfer publicans’ license fee, £2; highways subsidy | refund, £7O 15s 9d; scheme 5 re- j funds, £26 8s; drivers’ licenses £2 ss; miscellaneous, 2s 6d; scheme I 13 wages refund, £313 7s 2d. Cash j sewerage instalations, £144 15s 4d; first payment on time payment sewerage installations, £53 12s 3d. Total, £BOI 14s sd. In connection with some of the time paymest instalments which had so far not been paid it was decided that they be written to giving them seven days in which to pay. General On the motion of the Mayor and Cr Waigth it was decided to grant Cr McYey two months leave of absence from meetings and that a letter be sent to Cr McYey stating that the- Council were pleased to see that his health was on the improve. Accounts totalling £997 16s 2d were passed for payment. 1
