The Latest Novelty
The growing of "coalie" flowers, which has enjoyed such popularity in England, has now spread to Australia, and already hundreds of people have been experimenting with this fascinating flower, states the Sydney Morning Herald. Tho idea reads rather like a fairy story, for the ingredients for this flower are coal, powdered blue, salt and water, ammonia, and coloured ink. First of all the coal is placed in a fairly shallow bowl, and the rest of tlie ingredients are poured over it. For the first few days the bowl should be placed in hot sun or near a fire, till the flower (which resembles a fungus) begins to grow. If coloured ink is left out the flower will grow up white, and an amusing effect can be made by sprinkling different coloured inks over the flower, which will absorb the colouring in fantastic shapes. A number of Sydney shops are selling small quantities of coal and the necessary other ingredients for the growing of the flywers, which are an amusing novelty and would delight tho heart ot any child.
