An advance in retail prices of tea is iikely shortly, as there has already been a distinct rise in wholesale price*. This increase, which represents as mush as 5d a lb in the case of some special lines, and about 3d on general lines, has so far not been passed on to the consumer. Europe and Russia are buying heavily, causing a firming of London prices, which in turn is reflected on New Zealand. Merchants in Wellington are holding only short stocks, so that the advance in retail prices is probably not far ahead.
