England's Poor Showing

239 for Six Wickets Against South Australia WYATT IN GREAT FORM United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph,—Copyright. Received Saturday, 12.30 a.m. ADELAIDE, Jan. 22. Cloudy weather gave way to brilliant sunshine for tho England-South Australia match. The wicket was easy. Allen won the toss. The highlight of the day’s play was the race between Barnett and Hammond for the honour of scoring a thousand runs iu first-class cricket .this season. Barnett won with only 15 minutes to spare. England were fortunate to get a start of 96 from Barnett and Fishlock. Both men were missed, Barnott when seven and Fishlock at 11. Barnett was dropped a second time at 48. Cotton bowled at a terrific pace after lunch and had all the batsmen in difficulties. South Australia struck a purple patch before tea when Hammond, Leyland and Barnett were bundled, out in quick time. Hammond played a weak stroke to an express delivery from Cotton and. skied the ball giving Ward an easy catch. Leyland paid tho penalty for recklessness in hitting against Grimmett. Barnett played many brilliant shots. He was at the wicket for 75 minutes and . hit six fours. He went out to a magnificent catch by Bradman. Barnett jumped (fut for a vigorous on-drive. Bradman raced in the same direction as the flight of the ball and took the catch as the ball dropped within reach. There were few thrills in the day’s play. England went along steadily, the first fifty taking 66 minutes with the same for the second and the third in Gl. Wyatt and Amos put dash into the game, scoring fifty in 54 minutes. The Bouth Australian attack was accurate oxcept Ward who fell short of a good length. Fielding lapses increased the burden on the bowlers. Grimmett, Waite and Cotton stuck to their task gamely, proving too good for the later English batsmen. Ames was beaten badly by a ball from ttrimrnett and R-obins gave an easy chance off Cotton before providing Walker with a catch. England’s 239 for six wickets was a poor effort especially as they represented tho majority of the team for the fourth Test. Wyatt’s knock was one of the highlights of the innings in view of the coming Test. He was restrained but was very sound. The attendance was 10,600 and the receipts £490. The South Australian team is:—Cotton, Waite, Ward, Grimmett, Ryan, Richardson, Bradman, Hamence, Whitington, Badcock and Williams. Scores:— ENGLAND. First Innings.
