From Our Uwn Correspondent. Christmas Cheer Committee. Mr G. Jj\ Smith presided over a good attendance of members and business people at a wind-up meeting of the Christmas Cheer Week committee, when a balancesheet submitted by the organiser (Mr J. Newton, senr.; disclosed a credit balance of £5 11s, while the committee possesses assets to the value of £2B Ss Id. The balance-sheet was adopted and members expressed satisfaction at the gratifying position disclosed. Jt was unanimously agreed that the effort had been worth while and that the attractions had resulted in increased business in Poxton It was decided to accept an offer made by the Borough Council to store the committee's property and it was agreed that in return tho council should be granted the iree use of the lights and streamers if the occasion arose. A vote of thanks was passed to Dr. McMicken, of Otaki, for his voluntary services in connection with the wrestling tournament, and appreciation of the services of the organiser was voiced by those present. Tennis Club. Mr R. Read presided over a meeting of the committee of the Foxton Tennis Club i held on Wednesday evening. Also preI sent were Messrs A. Anderson (club captain), D. Speirs (secretary), M. G. Baird (treasurer), and Miss J. Francis. An apology for absence was received from Mr L. Sa> well. The Foxton Borough Council, in reply to a request from the tennis club to have another court tar-sealed and also to topdress tho two existing hard courts, asked for a detailed statement of the membership and financial position of the club in order that the asphalting the two grass , courts may be properly considered. The ifact that no rent for the current season had been paid and also the neglected appearance of the club's property had occasioned somewhat unfavourable comment and tho council naturally hesitated to give further assistance. A discussion ensued on the matter and it was pointed out that the council's account for rent of the property was now paid. It was also pointed out that steps had been taken by the club to have the grounds put in order. At the beginning of the season the Mayor had stated that the council would be prepared to keep the grass outside the actual playing area in good order if club members would guarantee to keep the inside grass cut. The club had engaged labour, and the grass in the playing area had been put in order, but it was then found that the council could not assist with the grounds outside. There was a large area of grass to keep in order within the playing area and as the grass courts were useless as far as play was concerned, It was contended that the male members, all of whom worked during the day, would have to spend a great deal of time during the evenings if all the grass was to be kept cut. It was decided to arrange for a working bee during the coming weekend, when an endeavour would be made to improve the condition of the club’s playing area The club captain was authorised to select a team of players to compete in an inter-club match against Levin, to he played at Levin on Saturday, January SO.
