Lighted Highways in Place of Headlights

COLUMBUS (Ohio), Dec. 20. An authority on highway lighting suggested in effect to-day that lights might be taken off automobiles and placed above highways as a means of curtailing night accidents. Lighter highways, said Dr. Frank C. Caldwell, chairman of tho ‘ r, 'tional illuminating Engineering Society’s committee ou street and highway lighting, offer a logical means of reducing accidents due to “poor seeing.”

l>r. Caldwell, consultant ou automobile lighting to the Ohio State Bureau of Motor Vehicles, said his committee estimated that the lighting of 50,000 miles of highways iu America, at “danger” points would save each year not less than 5000 lives. The Ohio State University electrical engineering professor pointed out that night accidents make up about half the total highway mishaps, although night traffic is only one fourth to one fifth of te 24-hour tottal.
