Thousands of the latest Italian recruits have left Rome and other main cities for southern ports. It is believed many are being drafted across the Mediterranean to Africa. Maltese Action Committees are being formed in the larger Italian towns. The committees are arranging meetings at which Italian claims* for Malta will be emphasised. The last touches have been made in the Vatican City’s preparations for war. The British Legation has accepted the Pope’s offer of hospitality for foreign diplomats who are unable to live outside the Vatican City. The Cairo, correspondent of the Times says many Italians are going home from Egypt. Business men are leaving unobtrusively after liquidating their interests. The Cairo correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says that for the last, two months many .Italian ships have been going home from Massawa through the Suez Canal carrying cargoes of lorries. - The Egyptian Home Defence De-, partment has ordered 1,800,000 gas masks from Britain. It is reported from London that the Italian liner Vulcania, which was taken to Gibraltar, was released after a few hours’ detention. No cargo and no passengers were removed. The Associated Press Budapest correspondent says that telephone communications between Turkey and Europe was cut shortly before 8 p.m.
