The friends of Mr O. H. Williams will regret to learn that he suffered an injury to his shoulder while playing squash recently. In consequence he will be unable to participate in the game for several weeks. Mr T. J. Casey, stationmaster at Pahiatua, is being transferred to Te Aroha in a similar capacity, and will be succeeded by Mr H. J. McCarthy, stationmaster at Avondale. Mr C. B. Weenink, stationmaster at Otaki, becomes stationmaster at Papakura.
The acting Commissioner of the New South Wales police (Mr F. J. Collings) died suddenly yesterday at the age of 59 states a Sydney cablegram. He was regarded as one of the most able men in the police force and was closely indentified with the organisation of the police on an emergency war basis.
- The death has .occured of Mr F. W. Egerton, secretary of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Musicians’ Union. Music and the welfare of musicians were among Mr Egerton’s principal interests in life. Born in Manchester 59 years ago, he took up music as a profession when a .youth and became an accomplished pianist and conductor. Before coming to New Zealand in 1912, he conducted several orchestras in Liverpool. Word has been received by Mr and Mrs It. L. Levin, “Westella,” Feilding, that Mr Levin’s nephew, Lieutenant John Hawkins, of the Royal Artillery, has been killed in action in France. Lieutenant Hawkins, who was 24 years of age, was the eldest son of Captain and Mrs J. D. C. Hawkins, Penhurst, Kentj-'and a grandson of the late Mr W. H. Levin. He adopted the Army as his career, and after passing through Woolwich Military College, entered the Artillery. He came to New Zealand for two or three years in 1922. Lieutenant Hawkins’s mother was a resident of Feilding several years ago.
