Joseph Powelka, who had been found guilty in the Palmerston North Supreme Court of a number of charges arising from recent incidents in the town and district, had been declared an habitual criminal and sentenced to 21 years’ imprisonment. A serious earthquake had shaken Italy and had caused untold damage and severe loss of life. The beautiful Cathedral at Bovino had been severely damaged. Seventeen towns and villages were affected, including Naples. ‘ ■ The value of building permits issued in Palmerston North during May totalled £1579.''
