' CLEVELAND, June 6. J. Ferrier (Australia), w r ith 36 —37 —73, gained a place among the first 35, assuring liis qualifying in the National- Open Golf Championship. Robert Babbish had the lowest amateur score with 71. Ferrier and H. Mandly tied for second place. S. Snead with a sensational 67, which was five below par, led the field on the opening day- breaking all existing records for' the tournament and course. Snead had six birdies by virtue of byilliant putting, since his drives were frequently off the line. Others included - -Smith, E. Oliver and S. Parks, jun.. 69, Hogan, Y. Ghezzi and A. Huske 70.
