RUSSELL STREET SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Russell Street School Committee was held on Tuesday, Mr J. A. Grant presiding. Other members present were: Messrs W. A. Boniface, E. A. Christieson, N. M. Doig, N. E. Hansen, D. W. McDowall, P. R- Walker and R. R. Williams (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr M. Laurenson. In view of enquiries from a number of parents in regard to the Intermediate School, the secretary was instructed to obtain a ruling from the Wanganui Education Board as to whether it will be compulsory for all children above Standard 4, in Palmerston North, to attend the school. After a discussion regarding dental clinic fees, tile committee decided to make a recommendation to the Dental Clinic Committee that the fees be on a sliding scale where more than one child from the same family attends the clinic. Russell Street children will in future attend the King Street clinic instead of the Terrace End clinic It was also mentioned that many parents were still unaware that children under school age are eligible for treatment at the clinics. Authority was given to the chairman and headmaster to purchasi a piano for the school. The thanks of the committee were accorded the Orchestral Society for the use of the society’s piano for several years past. Mr Boniface was appointed to visit the school The Education Board is to be requested to complete the levelling of and the filling of dangerous post holes on the recently acquired land, and also to have the new fences strengthened. \ The report of the headmaster (Mr J. Connor) stated that the-roll number at the end of the term was 287 and the average 266. During the term 64 children left the school and so far only 39 new children have been admitted. Miss U. Sheppard, who had been absent for the greater part of the term through illness, had resigned from the board. Miss’ N. M. Lethaby had commenced her duties at the school. Mr G. J. Annear, who had been relieving, had takcv U P a position at another school. During May, Dr. P. Moir (schools medical officer) and Nurse . Cox visited the school and carried out the usual medical examinations. Mr B. Blake, senior inspector, also visited the school. Thanks were extended to those who helped the ladies’ committee to collect £25 for the Red Cross Fund. One hour every alternate Tuesday was being , set aside for the making of articles to be sold for the Red Cross Fund and also for the soldiers who are serving overseas.
