SUCCESS OF OLD SURREY.
WIN IN CENTURY HURDLES. LADY CALLAGHAN’S STEEPLES. (By “Spectator.”) The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting opened on Saturday in tine weather after light rain in the early morning;. The track was soft but in good order. There was a good attendance and some interesting racing was seen. There was a decrease in totalisator investments, the amount handled being £17,396 10s, compared with £20,341 10s on the corresponding day last year, a drop of £2945.
A feature of the meeting; was the success of horses trained by H. Dulicu, of New Plymouth, who is one of the contenders for the position of leading trainer of the season. He had three winners in Kaiwaka, Heroic Maid and Kriemhild, and Young; Charles was second. F. McHugh, the Alarton trainer, had two winners . in Colcesal Chief and Dark Eagle. The most successful horseman was P. Atkins, who rode Kriemhild and Heroic Maid to victory.
A stylish victory was scored in the Century Hurdles by Mr L. H. Collinsori’s gelding, Old Surrey, who is trained at Awapuni by Mrs A. W. McDonald. A. McDonald, the veteran horseman, reappeared to have hie first ride for about a year, hie last race ride having been on Power Chief at Otaki. He displayed masterly horsemanship, and Ills win was very popular, the horse and rider receiving a groat ovation on returning to the birdcage. It wa3 Old Surrey’s first win over hurdles. Clarion Call, when attempting to run up to the leader round the baek, jumped impetuously, striking the top of the hurdle, and felf badly. This great'’jumper was also given an ovation when ho rose again. P. Jarvis, the jockey, was badly shaken, but both lie and the horse escaped injury. _ In the steeplechase Lady Callaghan gained a convincing win, Lactose being the only -other horse to threaten danger. The open distance race, the Connolly Handicap, provided an exciting finish in which the well-performed Amigo was just beaten by an outsider in Dark Eagle. , ■ Two inquiries were held by the judicial committee. Interference with Dynasty by Young Charles, ridden by P. Atkins, in the River Hack Handicap was investigated. The interference was admitted, the explanation being that Sioglindp had dropped back on. Young Charles. No action was taken, the cause being deemed accidental. Interference bv Lord Cavendish, ridden bv S. Waddell, with Gold Dale, ridden by R. J. Sargent, in the Winter Oats Handicap, was also investigated, but as Gold Dale bad contributed to the interference no action was taken. KAIWAKA’S EASY WIN.
Kaiwaka followed up Ins success at Awapuni with an easy win in the Purua Hurdles Handicap. With two hurdles to go he had the race in safe, keeping and wdht away to win comfortable. Kincora, Gay Chou, Hunting I,ore and Smoke Screen were prominent early, with Kaiwaka and High Peer in about the middle of the field. With seven furlongs to go Hunting Lore moved up- to the leaders. Gay Chou ran off, and shortly alter Hunting Lore lost his rider. After that nothing could get near Kaiwaka. Kincora held on for second and High Peer and War Lap moved up well to he next. KRIEMHILD’S TRIAL HANDICAP. Kriemhild owed her victory in the Trial Handicap to a smart beginning. Once in front she opened a big margin on the rest of the field, and only the second horse, Laughing Song, could get anywhere near her. ' . Moving smartly out of . the barrier, Kriemhild was soon three or four lengths in front Vienna and Dark Water fed back and Laughing Song went into second place in the straight, reducing the gap on the leader to a length. Next came Kealooa. Rhodes, Gay Gipsy and Gold Grip. FAVOURITE FALLS.
The Century Hurdles Handicap was notable for -the fall of the favourite. Clarion Call and a good win by Old Surrey, ridden’by A. McDonald. Old Surrey scored an end-to-end victory and with. Clarion Call out of the way never looked in danger ,of defeat, having something in hand at the finish. , . Going out of the straight the first time Old Surrey opened u pa gap of about 20 lengths. Curie, Clarion Call, Bngadore and Blue Tiger followed, Student Prince being out of the race early. The gap to the leader was reduced, and five furlongs from home Clarion Call, starting to make a move up, fell. Old Surrey was challenged only by Curie, but went away again to win comfortably by . three lengths. Brigadore, well back, wae ahead of Blue Tiger. . EXCITING FINISH. There was an exciting finish to the River Hack Handicap, which was fought out by Colossal Chief and the favourite, Young Charles. The two passed the post almost together, Colossal Chief getting the ferdict into the straight Colossal Chief came through on the inside and took the lead. Young Charles threw out a strong challenge and was narrowly beaten. Dynasty finished on in third place from Sieglinde Goldgain and City Song. THE STEEPLECHASE. The Grandstand Steeplechase Handicap became a struggle between Lady Callaghan and Lactose, but Lady Callaghan always had the better of it and maintained her position to be in front by one and a-half lengths at the post. . Lady Callaghan went to the front at the start and' led all the way. Master Hector fell at the first fence, Onewhetu also lost his rider, and Tutor dropped far behind. Red Sun also tired towards the end, when
Lady Callaghan and Lactose drew away. After the last fence Lactose challenged but Lady Callaghan held on without difficulty. Chat was a poor third and lied Sun was well back fourth. OUTSIDER SCORES. Amigo attempted to win the open distance event, the Connolly Handicap, all the way, but an outsider in Dark Eagle caught him in the straight and won by half a length, paying nearly double figures. , , - , Dark Eagle was close lo the leader lot most of the journey. Amigo opened up a gap, but the field closed up with half a mile to go. Amigo held on to the straight, when Dark Eagle took the lead and Amigo could not catch hiftt. Colonel Bogey finished well to be third, with Winsome Lu a fair fourth from the favourite Tidevvaiter, who was last turning into the straight. SPRINT TO LORD CAVENDISH.
Lord Cavendish won the Winter Oats, the open sprint, in a good finish after being well placed all the way. Gold Dale went to the front at first, and was followed by Lord Cavendish, Pe» koe, Nereus, Alunga and Notium. Gold Dale and Lord Cavendish then opened up a gap, but Nereus and Notium closed up on them when the straight was reached. Lord Cavendish held on to win, with Notium coming up. to second place, then Gold Dale and Nereus, with Royal Star II and Pekoe at the head of the others. HEROIC MAID’S GOOD WIN. Heroic Maid, who has been showing excellent form of late, scored a good win from end to end in the last race, the Borough Hack Handicap. Heroic Maid started best and with Golden Pam left the rest of the field several lengths behind. Iloroic Maid held on when the straight was reached. Golden Pam faded out and the main challenge came from Black Majesty, who could get only within a length of the winner. Next were Kilometre, Balgowlah, Viracious and Tuatara. RACING IN DETAIL.
