FAREWELL GATHERING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) * ADITT. April 17. A very happy evening party was recently arranged at, the home of Mr and Mrs A. Dobson, to farewell Mr D. A. W. Gorki, of the local post office staff. Mr Codd will leave shortly for Wellington on promotion. Close on forty friends assembled and music was enjoyed. Prior to serving supper. Mrs M. E. A. Martin (post, mistress) expressed her regret at Mr Gorki's ponding departure; she stressed his excellence as a painstaking and courteous officer and wished him well in his now position. Messrs A. E. Prujcan. A. R. AlcNae and A. Dobson endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker and slated how much Mr Codd would be missed m the- social as well as business life of the community. On behalf of his many friends, Mr R. C. .T. Martin made the presentationof a valuable initialled fountain pen,. and tlie recipient wps accorded musical honours. Mr Codd warmly thanked all for the beautiful gift, which, he said, would always bo a pleasant, reminder of his service in the Apiti Pest Office. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The,harvest thanksgiving was held in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning by Rev. 1,. J. llodson. A wealth of beautiful fruit ami vegetables, flowers, autumn berries and leaves decorated the church. On Monday evening a concert and auction of the harvest offerings was held in aid of the mission of the Church. The Town ITall was packed with an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. A large portion cf the concert was contributed by a party of girls from the Turakina Maori Gills’ College, Mat-ton. Tho students were in charge of Miss Kinross (principal) and Miss Middlemiss. Mr W. McKay extended a warm welcome to the visitors, which also included Mr and Mrs J. W. Gibson, Mr and Mrs R. C. Ball and Miss M. Bound. Mr J. H. Cowan piped tho visitors into the hall. Under the chairmanship of Rev. L. ,J. Hodscn, a very delightful and tuneful programme was contributed by the girls, concerted items, solos, various pois and hakas were finely rendered. One item of special appeal showed throe different battle songs of the Maori warriors. Ibe first, of very ancient date, a second the Maoris’ battle song of 1914-18 and; the third tho song of the Maori Battalion of to-day. An amusing ' and cleverly presented play was given, and received warm applause. Mr Ball, who is the possessor of a pleasing baritone voice, gave two enjoyable items. Mr Gibson presented a humorous number and bad to respond to a vociferous encore. Mr and Mrs Gibson also gave two vocal ducts. Miss Lound, who is a.n accomplished dancer, gave some cleverly executed ta.p dances., Mr Hodson warmly thanked the visitors for coming so far to help in tlie concert effort. Supper was served by the Presbyterian ladies, following which Air IV. McKay auctioned fruit and vegetables to spirited bidding. The result- of the auction, together with the concert proceeds, produced a most, creditable sum for the mission, PERSONAL. Mr W. Duncan is spending a few days in Wellington. Mr and Mrs 1.. Martin arc spending a holiday in Wellington. Messrs It. Jensen and W. Martin. of lable Flat, and Air S. .T. Martin, of Marion Block, are on a visit to Wellington. Air K. Stanley is spending a fortnight in Wellington. Air and Mrs T. Smith, of Alarackakaho. Hawke’s Bay, have been the guests of Mr and Airs 11. C. Mo-. Intyre. J With the closing day of tho Centennial Exhibition rapidly drawing near, it is interesting to note that at least 75 per cent, of tlie residents of Apiti have seen tho Exhibition, which is a remarkable good percentage in a comparatively small area.
