INTENSE PROVOCATION. Received April 23, 8.5 a.m. SYDNEY, April 22. At the trial of Withers on the charge of shooting his wife the accused pleaded not guilty. In a statement he said that his wife was guilty of misconduct with Edward Missen, for whom she worked. He said that on the night of the tragedy he went to see his wife at Missen’s house, and as Missen had previously threatened to shoot him he took a revolver for protection. While talking to his wife she bumped the revolver, which exploded, killing her. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter under intense pi-ovocation. Withers was sentenced to 12 months in gaol.—Press Association.
