AMERICAN FLEET
VISIT TO THE DOMINIONS’. RUMOURS OF CHANGED ITINERARY. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received April 23, 8.50 a.in. NEW YORK, April 21. 1 lie opposition to the fleet’s visit to Australia and New Zealand appears to have been revived in a new form, and rumours havo suddenly becomo current that President Coolidgo may cancel or modify the fleet’s proposed Australian and New Zealand itinerary. It is interesting to note how those rumours spring up. The Australian Press Association has received a wireless message from the Tennesso, which is now in Hawaiian waters, saying that a report to this effect was current in the fleet, indicating that one rumour allegos that only five battleships will ultimately be sent to Australia and New Zealand and that the same vessels will also visit Japan in order to mollify tho Japanese feeling. The naval intelligence office at Washington, commenting on the report, said that there was no present chunge of plans. Various New York newspapers are now printing despatches from Washington reiterating the same rumours, but pointing out that there is little likelihood that President Coolidgo will make any changes. The plans have been so far advanced that any changes would be misinterpreted or even react unfavourably on the fleet’s personnel.
Some correspondents intimato that it is feared the Australian and New Zealand enhtusiasm at tho fleet’s reception would be niisconstrued by Japan or that impolitic utterances during the fleet’s stay would have a bad effect in the Far East. Tho best opinion definitely indicates that the pluns will be carried out as announced without important modifications. President Coolidgo may personally reiterate to the Japanese Ambassador what tho navy has already made clear, namely that the cruise is only a technical manoeuvre without any other purpose. Official Japanese opinions, moreover, seem to havo also been definitely convinced of the sincerity of this position.—A. and N.Z. cable.
