Serious
Eeceived September 29, at 8.54 a.m. LONDON, September 28. _ The besiegersLoperations are largely directed against the positions to the westward of the railroad. These are nearer the harbour than are those of Erlung, Kintwan, and Paiyin. The capture of Kuropatkin fort, which is 425 feet above the sea, besides placing ! the waterworks at the mercy of the I Japanese, is strategically important. ! Admiral Alexieff, the Eussian Viceroy, | reports that the situation at Port Arthur is serious but not desperate. It has sufficient water, only two or three springs being captured. Provisions are abundant but the ammunition is limited. Some of the Russian guns being worn are worked with difficulty. There are still 12,000 able-bodied defenders.
