The Siege of Port Arthur.
A Severe Struggle,

LONDON, Sept. 28. .. The Japanese exhibit extraordinary activity in bombarding Port Arthur day and night. -. < . They are now battering the last defences eastwards, preparatory for a final assault.
The garrison, but not the fleet, were offered the honors of war if they woukl surrender.
General Stoessel refused, ancl threat ened to shoot the next summoner.
The Port Arthur garrison nightly construct works to stem the eastern advance, but they are aemolished at daybreak.
The Japanese sapped within a few hundred yards, but a sortie repulsed them.
Several Russian howitzers were can tnred.
Shells are damaging the shipping. Both sides display unparalleled fortitude ana aetermination.
The Eussian bands play the National Anthem, and the Japanese in the trenches shout "banzai" and -sing patriotic songs. ' ■ " ■ '
St. Petersburg advices state that the Eussians have lost 9,600 in Port Arthur since September 2.
