Mr A. G. Furness, of Melbourne, is at present on a short visit to Blen-
heim
Mr J. Eyre, who was previously connected with the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand, is now a member oi! the Permanent Artillery, Wellington.
Mr G. K. I. Stocker was. nominated yesterday for the vacant position on the Pieton Borough Council, and being the only candidate was declared elected.
Among those who' intend being present at the unveiling of the Cook Memorial at Ship Cove on Tuesday is Mr T. Lindsay Buick, the author of "Old Marlborough."
On Tuesday evening the contractors for the Wairau bridge, Messrs It. and S. .Atkinson, were entertained at dinner ut Havelock by the members of the Pelorus Road Board. The proceedings throughout were of a very cordial nature.
Messrs Lewis Anderson (Dunedin) F. M. Scully (New Plymouth), and A. Mill (Auckland),have consented to become candidates, representing the Post and Telegraph Department, in the election of the Public Service Appeal Board on May sth.
Major the Hon. R. H. Collins, General Staff Officer at Palmerston North, has been appointed AdjutantGeneral, succeeding Colonel Wolfe, who has "been appointed Inspector of Rifle Clubs, Drill Halls, and Rifle Ranges.
Bishop Grimes, of Christchurch, announces in his pastoral letter his intention to be present at the next Eucharistic Congress, which is to be held towards the end of April at Malta. His Lordship proposes to leave New Zealand about the end of February.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Wellington have been invited to be present at the unveiling of the Captain Cook memorial at Ship Cove on Tuesday next. Pressure of business may prevent Mr McLaren being present, and Councillor Smith, Senior Councillor, will tin that event act in place of the Mayor.
Adjutant and Mrs" Carter, Salvation Army officers, missionaries from India, and Mrs Brigadier Williams, whoso husband, Brigadier Williams, is in charge .of the Army'si social operations in New South Wales, are visiting friends in this district. Mrs Carter and Mrs Williams (nee Miss Alice and Miss Lizzie Law) have been absent for some years now in India and Australia. respectively, and doubtless old^ friends will be pleased to renew their acquaintance. '
Lieutenant-Colonel G. C. B. Wolfe of the.New'"Zealand Staff Corps, has been transferred to the reserve of officers and appointed inspector of rifle clubs, drill halls, and line ranges, with the temporary rank of Colonel I The son of Major-General Wolfe, -he was educated at the Plymouth and Royal Naval College and served in the Channel and Mediterranean squadrons. He retired from the Navy with the rank of captain in 1897, and the following year came out to New Zealand. In. 1900 he wa.s appointed O.C. Nelson, and in 1907 he was transferred to Auckland in a similar capacity.
Mr Alexander Macfarlane, the wellknown pastoralist, and: owner of Aehray and Mount Stewart stations, who died at Rotherham on January 31. after a short illness, was 49 years of age. The. late Mr Macfarlane was born in Rangiora, and was educated ■at Christ's Colleg^; ■•Ghristchurch, afterwards' going to the Lincoln Agricultural College. He had been a member of the Amuri County Council since 1893, but otherwise "he took no part in public affairs. In 1897 Mr Macfarlane married a. daughter of the late Mr G. W. Mcßae, of the Glens of Tekoa, and he leaves a widow, but no children.
It is announced that General Godley (Commandant of the New Zealand Forces) will pay a visit to England shortly. It is said that the "Commandant's trip has two prospective objects. In the first place, it is considered likely that he will attend the summer and autumn manoeuvres of the Imperial Army. In addition to thlis it is suggested that General Godley's visit to England may form part of a general plan under which officers commanding the defence forces' of the various. Dominions will meet "\nxl confer periodically in England with the Imperial authorities, with a vinw to coordination in the training and administrative, control of the defence forces of the Empire. General God ley denies the rumor of his intended resignation.
