The Commissioner of Lands has received a letter reporting that an alluvial goldfield had been discovered at Waukaringa. It is expected to prove a great success. A nugget weighing an ounce was found oh the field. The steamship Garonne, which left Plymouth on September 3rd, arrived this morniug. Melbourne, October 14. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company report that the accounts of the Victorian wheat crop are favourable, the crops having been improved by the rain, and it is hoped the yield will be larger than last year. As regards South Australia, the accounts are conflicting; from some districts the yields are reported to be much larger than last year, but in others only about the average. The Union Company's steamship Tarawera, arrived this morning. (Received October 15, 1.15 p.m.) October 15. Sir Patrick Jennings, Premier of New South Wales, in reply to Mr Gillies' proposal, considers that £20,000 is inadequate as a joint contribution by the colonies to the proposed Imperial Institute, and recommended that .£30,000 or £40,000 should be subscribed. The South Australian Government has expressed its inability to increase its proportion of £20,000 proposed by Mr Gillies. The Victorian Government suggests that municipalities should contribute to the Institute. (Received October 14, 3.4 p.m.) Sydney, October 14. In (he Legislative Assembly last night, an amendment moved by Mr Abbot on the proposed vote of censure, favouring retrenchment and additional taxation, was carried. (Received October 14, 10.15 p.m.) Evening. The Union Company's steamship Wairarapa, sailed to day for Auckland. The prisoners Penn and Lizzie Graham, arrived in Sydney to-day, from Kempsey; they were brought up at the Police Court, the former charged with murder at Barrier Island, and the girl with being an accessory after the act. The prisoners were remanded until the 26th inst. Penn made a statement that Lizzie Graham was on board the cutter at the time the murder was committed ; she was, however, unaware of the contemplated trip till their return to the vessel, when she was detained aboard against her will. (Received October 15, 1.15 p.m.) Sydney, October 15. A communication from Sir Robert Stout to Mr Suttor, the Postmaster-

General has been published, in which tho New Zealand Premier states that his Government hope to come to a decision this week regarding the Australian and New Zealand cable question.
