A terrible accident happened at noon to-day in the railway yard, William Campbell, miner and contractor, was struck by a loaded coal train and cut to pieces.
Auckland, July 19
Three more bodies of Natives were found at Tokinedo, Wairoa, making thirteen in all. Te Kooti having prophesied Rotoiti is to be destroyed by fire, the Natives have cleared out bag and baggage, emigrating to Awahou, near Ohinemntu.
Professor Hutton states that Lake Rotorua tilted several inches during the Tarawera eruption, the Rotorua side becoming depressed and the northern side higher, but no further change had occured since.
July 20. James Dodd was committed for tria for assault with intent.
M‘Donald, keeper of the Victoriastreet den, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for sly-grog selling ; £25 or a month ; and sureties for twelve months for £2OO. This will practically give him sixteen months’ imprisonment. Three of the girls were discharged through giving evidence against him, and three others sentenced io varying terras of imprisonment. The social state of things disclosed among the lower class was appalling. Duxedin, July 20. The Union Company have withdrawn the Tekapo from the berth for Kimberley through the want of sufficient support.
