The Kumara Times Published Every Evening. THURSDAY, JULY 22, 1886.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council will bo held this evening. As we noted on Tuesday and it is now - advertised, the Salvation Army Flying Brigade will make their return visit to ■ Kumara on Saturday next, and on the evening of the same day will commence to hold a course of meetings at the Theatre Royal, with the object of explaining their mission and the conversion of t souls. Captain Patrick, when he was here a few weeks ago, showed great earnestness and sincerity of purpose, and we doubt not his efforts to do good will bo duly appreciated. ’, The American barque Chasca, which left New York on the 25th January for e Wellington, New Zealand, put in at Syd■K ney yesterday, 177 days out. In refer■T enco to this barque the following telegram H was transmitted from Wellington on the 7th inst. “Grave anxiety is now felt *• for the American barque Chasca, 156 days out from New York. The report is that ~ Urn arrived off Wellington Heads more ~ than a month ago, and after signalling for a pilot stood away to sea, and has not been seen since. The pilot reports to the Harbor Board as follows ;— ‘ In refermice to the barque seen off the heads on ir the 2Slh of May, the signalman reported j lo me that at 7.25 a.m. he saw a vessel coming round Sinclair Head signalling. ' ’ At. once we launched the boat and ran as m far as the West Ledge. The barque was ' ■ I six or seven miles off, the wind being 5 ; -tnmg north must. We clip the following from last Friday’s j New Zealand Tablet:—“Otago has lost ] an old and respected resident in the per- 1 son of Dr. M'Brearty, who has left i Outrara to take up a practice at Knmara. The doctor’s removal is regretted by a 1 large circle of friends and well wishers, in 1 common with whom we hope he will find his change in every respect beneficial, and ■ in accordance with all his desires.” The Knmara quadrille club will hold their usual weekly assembly at the Adelphi Theatre, at eight o’clock to-morrow evening. A meteor of great size and extraordinary brilliancy was observed to pass over Ashburton about seven o’clock on Monday morning last. A correspondent of the Press states that the meteor, which resembled a great ball of fire, travelled in a north-westerly direction, and was seen to burst and leave a long streak of brilliant fire in its train, and finally disappeared in the direction of Methven. A gentleman who rode down from the neighborhood of Alford Forest early in the morning saw numerous small meteors before daylight, and he states that the meteor seen about 7 a.m. was the most brilliant he has ever witnessed. Wicked for Clergymen.— “l believe it to be all wrong and even wicked for clergymen or other public men to be led into giving testimonials to quack doctors or vile stuffs called medicines, but when a really meritorious article is made up of common valuable remedies known to all, and that all physicians use and trust in daily, we should freely commend it. I therefore cheerfully and heartily commend Hop Bitters for the good they have done me and my friends, firmly believing they have no equal for family use. I will not be without them.”—Rev. , Washington. D.C.U.S.A.
