Christchurch, July 20. Maitland Gardiner, of this city, received a letter from his brother Richard Gardiner, who is coming out as Engin-eer-in-Chief to M'Keone and Robinson, contractors for the first section of the Midland Railway. He probably leaves London on July 28th, per Ruapehu, biinging with him a considerable staff. From the letter it appears that the contract is for 25 miles west from Springfield. Later. From further details to hand re Midland Railway Contract, it seems certain that the work will be commenced at Brunnerton, proceeding in both directions along the line of the Grey river towards Reefton and along the Arnold river in the direction of Christchurch.
