Graham Beny, Agent-Genetnl for Victoria, has addressed a despatch to the Foreign Secretary, inq-iiring the intentions of France in regurd to the New Hebrides, and requesting his Lordship to ascertain when the islands will be evacuated. The latest information regarding the New Hebrides indicates that the question is in abeyance, fresh proposals from Fiance being looked for short l v. CuniiiTe Okve>>, oecrcarv to flu> Royal Commissioners of the Lidi.m and Colonial Exhibition, hits intimated that

a proposal will be made at an early date regarding the Permanent Colonial Exhibition Museum in London. (Received July 17, 5 p.m.) Later. Tenders for the New South Wales loan of £5,500,000, interest at 3£, minimum £94, were opened to-day. The total amount offered was found to exceed £17,000,000. Tenders at £95 7s 6d received 38 per cent., those above that price will be allotted in full. The divorce suit Crawford v. Crawford and Dilke is now being reheard by the Coart. The whole of the elections are now completed, and have resulted in the return of 316 Conservatives, 78 Unionists, 191 Gladstoneites, and 85 Pamellites. A petition is lodged against the return of Mr Alexander M'Arthur, for the Buckrose Division of Yorkshire (East Riding). Sir Evelyn Ashley (Liberal), who who was Under-Secretary for the Colonies in the previous Gladstone Administration, h*s been defeated. It is expected that the Ministry will tender its resignation immediately; but it is considered unlikely that a coalition will be effected between the Conservatives and Unionists. In the divorce suit, Crawford versus Crawford and Dilke, the evidence given by servants was in favor of the co-respondent, but the latter made certain damagiug admissions. Paris, July 18. A duel was fought between General Boulanger, Minister of War, aud Larentz, member of the Senate. Both were unhurt. Larentz fired, but missed, while Boulanger fired in the air. | SPECIAL TO PRESS ASSOCIATION. | London, July 12. Mr R. rl. Want, Solicitor for New South Wales in London, and Mr Fleming, agent of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, were present at the meeting between Sir Chas. Tupper and the Agent-General. Mr Fleming explained that two and a-half millions would be required to lay a cable beween Vancouver Island and New Zealand or Queensland; also that a subsidy of £67,000 would be required from the colonies and England, and he believed that the latter country was likely to contribute a third of the subsidy, provided that Government business was free if it did not exceed the amount of the. subsidy. Sir Arthur Blyth, Asjent-General for South Australia, withdrew, after stating that he opposed the scheme. An Tmpeiial and Colonial Marine Insurance Company is being floated, with a capital of one million. July 14. At a meeting of the Executive and Royal Commissioners of the Exhibition, it was resolved to recognise the services of the Prince of Wales by presenting him with a piece of plate, the subscriptions to be limited to two guineas. On the motion of the Lord Mayor, seconded by S»r Sanl Samuel, a committee was nppointed to arrange the details. The Pall Mall Gazette justifies the New South Wales Government in borrowing. Baron de Worms has obtained a divorce from his wife. A private meeting of Unionist and Conservative leaders is to be held, to formulate an Irish policy. It is helievd that Mr Chamberlain and the Marquis of Hartington will not join in the meeting. It is understood that a Conservative Ministry would be prepared to offer friendly help to Ireland. The Radicals are pressing Mr Gladstone noS to resign until the Unionists compel him to do so. July 15. Maxwell, who was convicted of the mnrder of Preller at St. Louis, has been sentenced to death, and he will be hanged on August 27.
