BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Killeen, Ziegler, Jorgensen, Maloney, Mulvihill, and Olden. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. The inward correspondence was read and received, and considered. A printed circular was read from the Mayor of Adelaide (Win. Bundey, Esq.) stating that a public meeting of the citizens of Adelaide had been held, at which it had been determined to forward an invitation to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales to visit the Australian Colonies daring 1887, and to be present and perform the inaugural ceremony in connection with the Adelaide Jubilee International Exhibition, to be held in June of that year; and requesting co-operation in giving his Royal Highness a hearty, loyal, and enthusiastic reception,—lt being the general impression of councillors that, according to latest information, his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales had decided not to visit the colonies, it was resolved that consideration of the circular be held over for the present. Letter from the County Clerk (Mr Rae), forwarding plan of boundary road, and inquiring whether the Borough Council wished to let the contract for making this road, or whether the Borough Council would prefer the County Council doing the work; also, whether (in either case) the Borough Council would be agreeable to pay half the cost.—lt was resolved that the letter be referred to the Public Works Committee for consideration. Letter from Messrs Jorgensen, Fitzsimons, and Killeen, requesting the Council to make approaches to their sections in First street.—The letter was referred to the Public Works Committee, to report to next meeting. From the Hon. Sec. Literary Institute acknowledging receipt of annual grant to the Institute.—Received. From the Trfe.-nivy, remitting .£34 10s 8d rat»s on Crown lands, and ,£] 5s 3d gcM duty.—Received.

From Bank of New Zealand re purchase of gold.—Received. Telegram from the Hon. J. A. Bonar, M.L.C., le abolition of gold doty.— Received. PUBLIC WOUKS. The Town Clerk - read the Public Works Committee’s Report, dated July 7lb, as follows : “ Present: Crs. Ziegler. Fitzsimmons, Killeen, and The Mayor. “Your Committee beg to report as follows—- “ 1. That contract section 1, Borough Reserve, J. Cairns, is finished, and the work has been passed with satisfaction. “2. That the. day-labour man, with the assistance' of one man, has made good progress in filling up the diverted creeks, and leveling on section 1, “3. That Qoy and party having reported their sections finished, the Committee have examined the work, and, as far as they can see, the grubbing has been fairly done. Some small items of felling have been pointed out, and the work will be finally examined when the 25 per cent, becomes doe. ■' “ The Committee recommend—- “ 4. That tenders be called at once for the culverts on section 4; and, in consequence of the urgency of the matter, have prepared specifications, and laid the same on the table. “ 5. That tenders be called for felling the centre of the Reserve j to be returnable at next meeting. “ 6. That lime and bone dust be procured in readiness, and that a small shed be erected on the ground • for storage and tool-house,” The report was received. Clauses 1,2, and 3 were adopted. Cr.- Ziegler moved—“ That clause 4 be adopted, and that tenders be called for the work, to close on July 16he Seconded by the Mayor, and carried. The Mayor moved—" That clause 5 be adopted, and that tenders be called, to close on the 22nd inst—Seconded by Cr. Ziegler, and carried. Cr, Jorgensen moved—" That consideration of clause 6 stand over to next meeting of the Council.”—Seconded by Cr. Olden, and carried. Cr. Maloney called the attention of the Council to the state of the drainage in Seddon street, between Third and Fifth streets.—On the motion of the Mayor seconded by Cr. Anderson, the matter was referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. The Council then adjourned to Thursday next, 15th inst., at 8 p.m.
