GENERAL ASSEMBLY

[united press association.] HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. W ELLINGTON, May 20. The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS BILL. The Hon. Mr Stout moved the second reading of the Municipal Corporations Bill. It was an amended version of the Bill passed by the Legislative Council last session. Mr Downie Stewart hoped the Bill would not be committed for ten days, is some of the provisions which he pointed out required careful consideration. Mr Sutter made some remarks to the same effect. Mr Stout said the bill had been before the House two years, and copies had been sent to all municipalities in i he colony. The bill was committed for Tuesday uexr. LAASING SECTIONS at DILLMAN’S TOWN. SOUTH ISLAND RESERVES. GOLDFIELDS COMMITTEE. RETIOENCY OP GOVERNMENT AS TO POLICY. [prom our own correspondent.] Wellington, May 22. The business in the House yesterday was of a formal character. Mr Sheldon asked if Government would pass an Order in Council to lease sections at Dillman’s Town. The Hon. Mr Ballance replied that an Order in Council would be passed at once on Mr Seddon’s motion. The report of the South Island Native Reserves Commissioners was ordered to lay on the table. On the motion of Mr Guinness a return was shown of the amounts collected by way of tolls on colonial bridges, and was ordered to lay on the table.

On tbe appointment of sessional committees Captain Sutter came to grief for telling Mr O’Callaehan to “ Shut up!” All the West Coast members are on the Goldfields Committee. Mr Seddon gave notice to add Capt. Sutter’s name and the Hon. Mr Rolleston’s. The goldfields members think the move tends to educate and cultivate a better frame of mind, and in the end to prove beneficial to the mining interests. Capt. Sutter declined the honour with thanks.

The Hon, Mr Rolleston will accept the position, with a view of keeping goldfields members straight.

The Government are very reticent as to their policy, and are acting very cautiously. No serious party fighting will occur until the Financial Statement is made.
