AID TO PROSPECTING.

.A meeting of the Prospecting Committee of the County Council was held last evening at the County Chambers, Hokitika, to consider applications for aid for prospecting. Mr Jack was voted to the chair. The Times reports :

Aj)plication from Tynan and party for 15s per man per week, to prospect three miles east of Ogilvie's hotel, Ross road, was granted from May 6. Application from Rogers aDcl party for aid under Class 11. to prospect near Nicholson's saw-mill, Dillman's To.vn, was granted, and a sum of £lB was recommended for payment for work already done. Russell and party applied for aid under Class 11. to prospect midway between Potts' saw-mill and the Ross road, Rimu; application granted fiom May 13th. An application from M'Coal and party to prospect (under Class I.) about 12 miles from ilium, between JMount Constitution and the right-hand branch of the Hokitika river, was referred to the County Engineer to deal with. Application from Cameron and party to prospect about one mile to the east of the Hospital Creek bridge, on the couuty boundary, was granted up to £lO, provided the Borough Council contribute an equal amount. Augustus Boys, of Blue Spur, applied for self and party for aid, under Class 11., to drive a prospecting tunnel from (he Arahura River to the foot of the main range on the south side of the. flat—a distance of 5G chains, striking the deviation road and Blue Spur track j application granted up to 1000 feet, or a total expenditure of ,£lB7. Malone and part}' applied for £(} for prospecting work done by them at Kanieri Forks, but the application was not entertained as they had gone to work without first sending in an application.

The committor decided that in no case would payment bo made for work done except such work was performed after the application had been considered and approved. The committee then adjourned.
